SUMMER THRILLS - FIVE PARKS WITHIN 200 MILES OF BALTIMORE OFFER OLD PLEASURES, NEW EXPERIENCES
Sun, The (Baltimore, MD) - Friday, July 23, 2010

Kings Dominion

Why you should visit in 2010 "It's had a few down years, but I'm really impressed with where it's headed and how the park is looking this year," says spokesman John Pagel . "We've used tons and tons of paint... we've painted just about every building in this park. We're really moving to enhance the visitor experience, to get people excited about it again."

Also generating a lot of excitement is the park's 15th roller coaster, the Intimidator 305, named in honor of legendary racecar drive Dale Earnhardt, who was nicknamed The Intimidator, and the ride's fear-inducing height, 305 feet. The coaster reaches a top speed of nearly 90 mph during its three-minute ride.

"It's the most intense roller coaster I've ever been on," Pagel says, "and I've been on a lot."

Also this year, the Peanuts gang's Planet Snoopy has replaced the Nickelodeon and Hanna-Barbera characters (Yogi Bear, the Flintstones) that for years roamed through the park's kids' area.

Rockford attorney wants to expose immigration myths at talk
Rockford Register Star (IL) - Monday, June 14, 2010

ROCKFORD -- When Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona signed the nation's toughest bill on illegal immigration into law in April, she sparked a national dialogue on one of the country's most thorny issues.

Plenty of misconceptions about immigration law have crept into the discourse, and Sarah Dady is trying to clear up the confusion and set the record straight.

The Rockford immigration attorney will host a free lecture June 24 at the YWCA of Rockford, 4990 E. State St, to explain current immigration laws and policies and proposed reforms to the nation's immigration system.

"Immigration is a hot topic right now, and we need to be able to understand what those myths and misconceptions are," Dady said.

The aim of the Arizona law is to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants.

It makes it a crime to fail to carry immigration documents and gives police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.

Dady is among opponents who say the law invites harassment and discrimination against Hispanics regardless of their citizenship status. She has previously spoken about the issue to the League of Women Voters, the Rockford Area Association of Realtors and many local churches.

Debate over immigration reform vexes even Rockford's chapter of the Libertarian Party, which typically favors individual sovereignty over government rule.

"Libertarians can't agree on this issue," said E.J. Pagel of the Rockford Area Libertarians. "Some are libertarian purists who say 'I don't want the government telling me who I have to hire and how much I have to pay them and where they have to be from,' ... I'm a moderate nationalist libertarian and I believe if you don't have borders, you don't have a nation."

Midway ISD foundation awards $61,000 in grants to teachers
Waco Tribune-Herald (TX) - Sunday, May 23, 2010

Midway school district art teacher Deeanne Litton has a vision.

She wants River Valley Intermediate School to become the YouTube of campus and district information, producing videos for everything from classroom rules to an interview with the superintendent.

There’s a good chance Litton and her colleagues will realize these projects, thanks to the 30 Flip video cameras the teachers will buy with an almost $5,000 grant from the Midway ISD Education Foundation.

The foundation recently awarded $61,000 in grants to teachers across the district.

About one-third of that money is going to projects that will use popular technology, such as iPod Touches and Flip cams, to tackle academics, behavior and more.

‘Innovative teaching’

“We look for creative and innovative teaching methods and lately technology really is getting the teachers’ interest,” said Suzi Pagel, executive director of the Midway ISD Education Foundation.  [abridged]
